Christmas is around the corner already! I love Christmas so much! As a child, Christmas was a season of spending time with the family and of course, over eating. I enjoy eating meat and lots of chin chin every Christmas. These days I do not enjoy the beef we used to eat then, I prefer my Nando’s periperi chicken every Christmas.
I remember my brothers and I helping with all the Christmas preparation and cooking; we would fry meat and lots of other snacks. My favorite Christmas snack was and still is chin chin. Even now, we always have chin chin in the house; most times after dinner we just feel like having “something to chew” and this is where it comes in handy. I usually make some and store in air tight container.
Chin chin is a crunchy fried snack popular in some West African countries. Most people in Nigeria know and love this snack. There are various methods of making chin chin ranging from the very soft to the very hard ones; depending on the mixture of ingredients. The basic ingredients used in making chin chin are flour, nutmeg, milk, and butter. Other optional ingredients are; egg if you want to add more protein, baking powder to give it a softer texture, and sugar or honey to taste.This method I want to share with you is neither hard nor soft, just somewhere in between and very delicious. A must have for every home, definitely for this Christmas celebration!
- 2 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 tbspn baking powder
- 1/2 tbspn ground nutmeg
- 30g butter
- Oil to deep fry
- Sift the dry ingredients together; flour, nutmeg, and baking powder into a big bowl.
- Add sugar to mixture.
- Add in the butter and mix, ensure there are no lumps.
- Pour in the milk and knead for all ingredients to get incorporated and the dough is smooth. Cover and let it sit for about 20 minutes
- Drizzle some flour on a work surface and use a rolling pin to flatten the dough, and cut into desired shapes (I love this pizza cutter from Jumia click here to get one) Bear in mind that it will double in size when fried.
- Deep fry in any oil of your choice. Stir continuously as you fry till it turns golden brown.
- Drain on a paper towel and serve when cold.
